SPIRITUAL PHILOSOPHY

Spiritual philosophy can be called the Bible faith and ideology. These are works and walks of faith in Jesus Christ. EL University of Theology and Biblical Seminary has specific lectures that are specifically prepared for students in charismatic classes and those spiritual battles.

EL University of Theology and Biblical Seminary has specific class for problem solving in order to help the students to represent Jesus. These will help the students to know how and what to do in times of bereavements, times of pains and sorrows, times of their difficulties, times of their needs and in times of their confusions. This is a specific class for specific students in the class of deliverance, warfare and those in charismatic classes.

STUDENTS SERVICES
Theological studies involve the whole person, not just the intellect and are enriched when they take place in a faith community of mutual support. The office of student services attends to Eluntabs community life, as well as to non-academic student needs ranging from spiritual formation to career development. The Office of student services provides programs and services in the following areas.

Spiritual Direction and Retreats: The office recruits and maintains a list of qualified spiritual directors whose work is known to the school. A presentation of directors is made during orientation week, and students services personnel are available to make recommendations to students seeking a spiritual director at any time during the year. Students retreat are organized by the office as needed and a list of private retreat centres in the area is available for individuals or groups who wish to arrange their own retreat within EL University of Theology and Biblical Seminary campus in Abia State.

Liturgy and Prayer: The college community celebrates liturgy daily, Tuesdays through Fridays. Faculty, staff and Students work together in planning and carrying out school liturgies with coordination from the office of Students Union. Students are encouraged to join a local parish for Sunday liturgies, Prayer groups and prayer days are planned and scheduled by staff and or students and may meet regularly or occasionally, according to student interest.

Faith Sharing: At the beginning of each trimester, groups are formed which meet weekly throughout the trimester for faith sharing. Occasional evenings or days of reflection are scheduled according to student interest.

Lay Ministry Formation: Student groups meet regularly to explore issues in ministry and for mutual support in ministry and studies. The Office of Student Services plans panel discussion, workshops and other opportunities for addressing issues such as collaborative ministry, spirituality and ministry, ministerial careers and multi-cultural ministries by the authority of EL University of Theology and Biblical Seminary.

Women’s Group: A women’s group is open to students, faculty and staff meets monthly for prayer and community and to discuss issues of concern to women in theological education and in ministry organized by women in ELUNTABS.

Housing: The School has limited housing facilities for students. These include apartment units, and lay community houses. A Housing coordinator assists students of the sister schools of the ELGROTHIN in locating housing. Housing application forms are available in the Admissions office, therefore contact Director of Business.

Career Development and job Placement: A broad range of services is provided to assist students with their career search. Workshops focused on developing a career plan, networking, resume writing and interviewing are held throughout the trimester. Career panels focusing on various ministerial careers allow alumna and other professionals the opportunity to share their job experiences with students. A career advisor is available to meet with students individually. The Office maintains listing of job opportunities as a newsletter describing job openings I published regularly in this campus.

Communications and Student Life: Social gatherings are held throughout the year. These gatherings provide an opportunity for friendship, recreation and community building among students, faculty and staff. Lounges in the building provide space for informal gatherings and dropping, reading current periodicals, logging onto the internet or relaxing between classes.

A weekly newsletter is distributed to inform students about events within as well as in the other items of interest are posted on bulletin boards in the main building and each student has the right to check. A school Directory contains addresses, phone numbers and email of all students, faculty and staff to facilitate communication. The Director of Campus and students affairs can be contacted for this.

DEGREE PROGRAMS IN EL UNIVERSITY OF THEOLOGY AND BIBLICAL SEMINARY:

MASTER OF DIVINITY (M.DIV.)

Introduction:
The four year Bachelor of Divinity degree is the ordinary course of theological education and training for pastoral ministry in the church today. It is also the first professional degree that meets the needs for both academic training and pastoral experience of those preparing for ordination to presbyteral ministry. To accomplish this purpose of professional theological education, we provide courses of instruction in theology and related disciplines, introduces students to the use of source materials and the practice of scholarly work and investigation, and provides opportunities for supervised experience in pastoral ministry of various kinds.

Objectives:

Degree of Divinity program is designed to enable graduates:

To mediate and articulate Christian doctrine and life, e.g. in the ministry of the word, whether in preaching or catechetical instruction; in the planning and leading of prayer and liturgical worship, in the healing ministries of counseling and spiritual direction.
To collaborate in equality and mutuality with ordained and non-ordained men and women in ministry.
To develop a commitment to life-long theological study and learning which would focus on interrelating their pastoral situations, theological sources and the cultural pluralism in which we all live and
To integrate the faith they live with the demands of justice, to this purpose, they should be able to do socio-cultural analysis and be able to reflect upon and deal with the ambiguities and polarities in our church and our culture.

Admission Requirements:
ELUNTABS welcomes the application of all qualified persons who wish to pursue the degree of Divinity program. Applicants should follow the general admissions procedures in catalogue

Prerequisites:

The Bachelor of Arts degree or its academic equivalent.
Nine semester or 12 quarter hours of philosophy. Typically this prerequisite is satisfied by courses in the areas of history, ethics and method Students preparing for ordination are required to have completed, 2 Trimester units or 36 quarter hours of philosophy.
The applicant should possess the personal maturity and faith commitment commensurate with preparation for full-time ministry. To this end, preference is given to applicants who have at least one year of post-college work experience and at least part-time, directly ministerial experience

Advanced Standing:
A student who has taken courses in theology not longer than 2 years prior to registration may petition the Academic Dean for advanced standing in the degree of Divinity program. This petition may be included with the application for admission or it may be submitted during the first semester of study as ordinary, the maximum amount of advanced standing that is granted is 24 credit hours (two trimester of full-time study). Petition forms are available from the Assistant academic Dean or the office of Admissions.

Modern Language Study:
Academic credit for basic modern language study is not applicable to degree programs. However, students are encouraged to take advanced ministerial language courses while they are in the degree of Divinity program. Proficiency in English is recommended for all degree of Divinity students.

Degree Requirements
The Bachelor of Divinity degree requires the completion of a minimum of 12 trimesters of course work (25 three unit courses) or the equivalent, plus 3 trimester units for the comprehensive examination, totaling a minimum of 6 trimester unit. A student may expect to complete the Master of Divinity degree in three academic years, but must complete the program within six calendar years from the date of initial registration in the program. Course work must be successfully completed while enrolled. The normal full-time course load at ELUNTABS is twelve trimester unit.

Each of the Departments supplies a spectrum of course offerings enabling the student to develop a solid theological foundation for future ministry. In the selection of courses, the role of the academic adviser is crucial. From the student-advisor dialogue must come the balance of theological experiences specific to the student’s needs and yet broad enough for the development of the diverse knowledge and awareness necessary for exercising ministry in today’s Church.

The Master of Divinity curriculum is constructed around three theological synthesis. The first is composed of foundations in the history of Christianity, Christian ethics, systematic theology and scripture. The second emphasizes the application of theories and methods of theology in ministry by means of field education and pastoral theology. The third involves the preparation for and the taking of the comprehensive examination.

Credit Distribution for Course Work in El University Of Theology and Biblical Seminary.
Seventy-five hours of credit must be completed according to the following course distribution.
Bible (15 credits) 3 trimester long, 3-credit courses in which students should achieve competency in each testament with coverage of two of the three areas in each (Pentateuch/History, Prophets, Wisdom) and (Synopsis, Paul, John). Students should learn the methods of biblical interpretation and their appropriation in the exegesis of text. Students will acquaint themselves with biblical theology and its application to pastoral needs.
History (6 credits) 2 trimester long, 3 – credit courses, designed to insure that students have the opportunity to examine in some depth basic historical questions and dominant historical movements which continue to affect pastoral practice.
Systematics (15 credits) 2 trimester long, 3- credit courses, in systematic theology chosen to provide theological understanding of the basic doctrinal questions which affect pastoral practice.
Christian Ethics (9 credits) 3 trimester long, 3-credit courses, in which students will achieve competences in foundational moral theology, social ethics and in at least one other area of applied ethics, such as sexual ethics or biomedical ethics.
Pastoral Studies (12 credits) One 3-credit course in introduction to canon law and canon law of marriage. The remaining 9 credits are distributed among courses in spirituality, pastoral counseling, liturgical theology, celebrational style, preaching and confessional counseling.
Field Education (9 credits). The field education program is designed both to help students develop expertise in the practice of Christian ministry, and to work with their ministerial location as a practical framework for a critical appropriation of Christian tradition. Students are encouraged to do field education placements in two different ministerial settings. Each student will develop an individualized plan with the staff of the field education program.

Students must complete ‘a’, and either ‘b’ or ‘c’ below.

One field education internship in Christian religious education, Christian spirituality or evangelization, culture and society. The internship consists of supervised field practicum and a concurrent two trimester colloquium utilizing theories and practice methods from the relevant area of practical theology in sustained theological reflection, for a total of 6 credits.
One field education special project to be done during one summer, followed by theological reflection in the early fall, for a total of 3 credits. (Instead of the special project, students may opt to do a second internship for 6 credits).
One integration colloquium of theological reflection on prior supervised ministry for a total of 3 credits.

Electives (9 credits) 9 credits taken in courses which allow students to build upon previous theological background and enhance the preparation for their own ministerial plans, as well as to prepare further for the comprehensive examination.

The Comprehensive Examination:
At the end of the course work in the program, the student will prepare for a comprehensive examination. Ordinarily, no more than six additional credits of other academic course work are taken in which the student registers to take the comprehensive examination. As the final requirement for the Divinity degree, the comprehensive examination will include both a written and an oral part. All aspects of the theological program will be integrated in the questions prepared by the examination board and preparation for the comprehensive examination is intended to provide the student with an opportunity to synthesize the various theological disciplines and to delineate their pastoral applications. A syllabus for this examination is made available to first year students towards the end of their first year (but is available earlier upon request from the Academic Dean’s office). Specific details regarding procedures are available from the Academic Dean’s Office.SPIRITUAL PREPARATION.
In pursuit of its mission to help candidates prepare for ordained and non-ordained ministry in the church, it is a goal of the school to facilitate students’ development for building up the Church as a community of faith, of worship and of justice and love. The attainment of this goal means.

That they be men and women of faith, familiar with the Word of God in scripture and with the church tradition in interpreting and understanding that Word; contemplative in their personal assimilation of this faith in a life of prayer.
That they be prepared to exercise leadership in Christian worship, through planning, preaching, administering sacraments, and presiding at and other community celebrations, according to the gifts each has received.
That they be prepared to counsel, guide, encourage and instruct in the Christian way of life, with special attention to issues of justice and human dignity, to lead in the formation of the just society and to exercise ministries of reconciliation, according to their gifts.

An important dimension of preparation for pastoral ministry consist of theological reflection upon contemporary human concerns, a contemplative reflection requiring time, discipline training, communal experience, study, dialogue and prayer. In further service of growth in this process. We actively promotes opportunities for spiritual direction, retreats and worship.

THE PROGRAM FOR PRIESTLY FORMATION
The program for Priestly Formation of the National Conference of Presbyters, Bishops requires that all candidates for ordained ministry complete four full years of theological study. This normally entails one year of study beyond completion of the Divinity degree. Conference stipulates that this fourth year will generally include the completion of trimester long courses in our institution.

A student who has taken graduate courses in theology not longer than 4 years prior to registration may petition for advanced standing in Eluntabs program. This petition may be included with the application for admission, or it may be submitted during the first study. No more than 6 units of advanced standing can be applied to the degree of theology program. These units must be from courses which cohere with the courses taken as a specialization. Petitions for advanced standing are available from the Assistant Academic Dean or from the Office of Admissions.

Master of Divinity Students at ELUNTABS:
Work toward the Master of Theology degree may be begun by a Master of Divinity student when all course work for the M.Div. has been completed, even though the student may not yet have passed the comprehensive examination, Students can apply six units of work done as an M.Div. student to a master of Theology degree provided these six units are in the final two semesters of M.Div. studies and are not required for completion of the M.Div. degree. The letter from the academic advisor should testify to this (see “Additional Requirements by Program Th.M”.

Degree Requirements:
A student may expect to complete the Master of Theology degree in one academic year, but must complete the program within four calendar years from the date of initial registration in the program.

Program Focus Students in the Master of Theology program will be expected to select a focus for their studies.

Students opting for a research Th.M. will focus their studies toward a deeper personal knowledge and scholarly advancement in some particular area of the theological disciplines. Such students will be expected to write a thesis.
Students opting for a pastoral Th.M. will focus their work toward the communication of the Christian Gospel pastoral Th.M. students may opt to do a project rather than a thesis.

To commission the gospel ministers is the sole business of the presbyters, Episcopals, Elders or ordained senior ministers. How to Ordain Gospel Ministers:

To ordain the gospel ministers is the sole business of the General Overseer, Bishops, Presbyters and Episcopal who shall anoint the ministers, lay hands on them, pronounce Bible benefits on them and openly set them apart for the business of God and His Church.

To consecrate the Bishop is the sole duties of the elderly priests, Presbyters, Episcopal and Elderly Bishops who have served in the office of the Bishop before that time, who shall lay hands and consecrate the Bishop to become married.

To bury the Dead:

Burial is an important issue in the church and serves as a great evangelism to the living and as the last sermon from the dead person. This course therefore unveils the ethics, methods, type of sermons, how to conduct issues and activities during, before and after the burials. The Christian methods shall only be applied irrespective of the pressures and threatening from the unbelieving world.
